Sentient Energy is actively seeking to fill an Analytics Software Developer role as part of the data science organization based in Milpitas, CA. This organization is responsible for building, operationalizing, and enabling data-driven products, solutions, and professional services that allow electric utilities to drive value from their grid modernization and digitalization investments. These offerings are enabled by a custom-designed advanced analytics platform that combines the best-in-class AI technologies and practices with sound engineering first principles to drive descriptive, diagnostic, and predictive insights from the data. With the projected increase in utility IoT deployments, the amount of operational and non-operational data is exploding. Deriving business value from these investments requires both small data and big data applications to effectively collect, ingest, and analyze the data for both edge and cloud deployment. Real-time and batch analytics need to be developed to realize the full value of IoT investments. Our efforts help electric utilities streamline operations, enhance system reliability, integrate more renewables, and increase system safety and resiliency.

This position offers a unique hands-on opportunity to work with lead platform engineers and architects and develop the next generation of grid analytics software that puts the future in the hands of utility operators and planners and enable them to keep the lights on, integrate more renewables, and avoid catastrophic failures. You will be an integral member of the cloud platform engineering team and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of power system experts, senior data scientists, and cloud technologists to help solve some of the long-standing industry challenges as we face an exponential growth in digitalization and grid modernization.

About Us

This team is responsible for research, technology development, and solution delivery of analytics applications based on the synergistic use of digital grid data coupled with the state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence and power system first principles.

What You Will Do

  • Own execution, and delivery of platform features that support company’s vision and mission for value-added analytics products, solutions, and services
  • Design, development, and optimize platform core functionalities together with other developers, solution architects, and data engineers
  • Integrate and operationalize prototype algorithms and applications that extend platform capabilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise to other developers and engineers to write performant code and apply sound software development practices and technologies including agile, version control, and continuous development and integration
  • Support multiple user groups including data science and application engineers to leverage the platform capabilities and produce outcomes that support the revenue plans
  • Participate and influence the roadmap and architectural elements of the platform and maintain secure enterprise analytics in the cloud
  • Collaborate with commercial IT, engineering, product management, and other teams within the company to align on priorities, remove blockers, and provide a seamless end-to-end integration within the ecosystem products both within and outside the company
  • Define and generate custom reports and KPIs related to data flows and performance of the system in the cloud
  • Maintain and extend cloud and container-based software applications to assist model development and deployment
  • Maintain an understanding of best practices and state of the industry in applied machine learning and artificial intelligence to guide future product decisions and directions


Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Experience in a similar role, designing, and developing robust and maintainable software solutions
  • Experience with a strong grasp of object-oriented programming concepts, including greenfield development, solution refactoring, and ongoing optimization
  • Experience developing and implementing solutions with AWS CDK with S3, Lambda, ECS (Fargate/EC2), Redshift, RDS, DynamoDB, and Step Functions
  • Strong knowledge in relational databases, understanding of OLAP concepts and storage
  • Strong understanding of SOLID development patterns and demonstrating the abilities to effectively apply them
  • Experience using Docker including the building, management, and deployment of containers
  • Experience defining, developing, and driving best practices across development and cross-functional groups


What Will Put You Ahead

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in a similar role, designing, and developing robust and maintainable software solutions
  • 2+ years of Python development experience with a strong grasp of object-oriented programming concepts, including greenfield development, solution refactoring, and ongoing optimization
  • 2+ years developing and implementing solutions with AWS CDK with S3, Lambda, ECS (Fargate/EC2), Redshift, RDS, DynamoDB, and Step Functions
  • Familiarity with concurrency, multithreading, and parallel processing techniques in Python
  • Well versed with CI/CD tools and processes
  • Experience working within a data analytics focused organization where some of the core resources are data scientists
  • Development knowledge of web-based UI frameworks such as Dash Plotly or Streamlit
  • Experience implementing solutions using MQTT protocol
