As a Sr. Product Manager – EMS you will be responsible for driving the strategy, development, and delivery of cutting-edge Energy Management System (EMS) solutions for standalone battery energy storage and hybrid solar+storage systems, with an emphasis on large, front-of-the-meter, utility-scale applications. The EMS is responsible for control, monitoring, diagnostics, and alerting of technical and performance issues, and harnesses significant operational experience from Stem’s deployment and Network Operations Center (NOC) teams as well as bridges both cloud software and edge capabilities.

You will contribute to various aspects of product and solution management including engaging customers and internal stakeholders to develop and document product and market requirements, vision, and roadmaps and collaborating closely with the Stem development team on prioritization and product delivery. You will support other Stem teams on the development of go-to-market strategies and sales enablement, including pricing and solution structuring, collateral development, training, providing subject matter expertise in sales engagements, and representing Stem at trade events and conferences.

You will collaborate with numerous internal subject matter and functional experts, and will be comfortable working with Sales, Business Development, Product Marketing, Policy, Finance, Legal, Engineering, and Operations, among others. You are a doer as well as a thinker, who goes beyond the conventional to promote ideas beyond the norm.

Responsibilities:

Roadmap and Vision

  • Gather, organize, and analyze customer needs, competitive offerings/products, and industry trends regarding EMS for energy storage and hybrid PV applications.

  • Cultivate subject matter expertise on Stem’s existing EMS offerings to inform capability gaps and prioritization of features.

  • Synthesize current state, customer needs, and competitive analysis to inform a phased roadmap and EMS solution vision.

  • Socialize roadmap and vision with internal stakeholders to gain organizational and architectural buy-in in concert with other Stem solution offerings.

  • Enable sales with support in customer engagements for early-stage project opportunities and non-standard deals, where roadmap features will be required for successful project execution.

Requirements

  • Develop solution- and market-level requirements and business cases representing customer needs, market motivations, and market share capture.

  • Develop detailed product requirements for both cloud software and edge components in collaboration with technical product management and development stakeholders.

  • Socialize and evolve Athena software integration and UI requirements with software development and architecture stakeholders.

  • Support detailed development planning efforts with contributions to user stories and general subject matter expertise.

Development

  • Own and prioritize technical product backlog in development of Stem’s EMS solutions, supporting software and edge products that meet and exceed customer requirements and respond to energy transition needs.

  • Collaborate with the engineering team in the high-level design of data models and software systems.

  • Collaborate with UX designers on user workflows and UI design to produce mockups, interactive prototypes, and documentation.

  • Assess and address technical risks and delivery risks to ensure timely delivery of products and features.

  • Participate in agile processes and ceremonies within the software development team, and follow high standards for automation, quality, and transparency/observability.

  • Collaborate with technical stakeholders to develop documentation for operations and delivery adoption of new technologies.

Sales Enablement

  • Collaborate with marketing stakeholders to develop compelling collateral and content that articulate the differentiated value of Stem’s EMS offerings to partners and customers.

  • Collaborate with marketing and finance to develop the new product packaging/structure, pricing, costing, and relationships with complementary solution offerings by other Stem teams.

  • Develop and deliver training on new or altered EMS solutions to Sales and other teams critical to the sales process.

  • Provide non-standard deal-level support, as needed.

Solution Promotion

  • Develop and publish/deliver thought leadership content in support of EMS solutions, including webinars, white papers, blog posts, etc.

  • Promote Stem’s EMS solutions and value propositions at industry events and conferences:

Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, business, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in product management, product marketing, business development, and/or market entry for software and controls products.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in the energy industry, specifically with energy storage, with solar experience a plus.

  • Working knowledge of energy management systems (EMS), battery cell technologies, power conversion systems (PCS), system integration, and long-term service agreements (LTSA)

  • Working knowledge of large-scale, front-of-the-meter edge solutions and requirements for meeting NERC CIP compliance.

  • General knowledge of energy market fundamentals

  • In-depth knowledge of market and utility system integration e.g., market-based dispatch, scheduling coordinator/entity interfaces, utility DSO and TSO integrations, DNP3, etc.

  • Ability to work autonomously with excellent time management skills, focusing on key outcomes amidst competing priorities and tight deadlines.

  • Ability to think across disciplines and functional expertise.

  • Ability to embrace ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.

Job Location

This role is remote and can be located anywhere in the United States.

Salary Range

$101,900.00 - $142,750.00
